Paper

Paper has a long history. Today, an infinite number of paper types are available.

The selection of the paper basically determines the overall effect of a print product, because the paper choice influences the readability, the text and image reproduction; it affects the colour impact and lays the foundation for good print quality.

There is a fundamental distinction between coated and uncoated papers.

COATED PAPERS are coated with a bonding agent ("finish") and thereby given a smooth and sturdy surface. They are often used for books combining text and pictures.

UNCOATED PAPERS, however, appear slightly rough, they are more haptic and are usually only surface coated to achieve a certain degree of surface strength.
Due to the haptic effect, they being used more and more for the reproduction of pictures in, for example, art catalogues and photo books.

Other important features of the paper are:

  • Opacity (non-transparency)
  • Degree of whiteness
  • Weight and volume
  • Grain
