Grain

The grain is very important for good processing of paper.

Paper fibres are not scattered but lie side by side in one direction, the direction of the grain.
Paper should always be folded in the direction of the grain to create a good-looking fold. If we work against the grain, the edge of the fold may tear when the paper is folded.
The spine must always be parallel to the grain, because otherwise an unsightly bulkiness will appear when you are browsing through a book or booklet.

In the K-BOOKS production, this criterion is of course always observed when the paper is ordered.

HOW DO I CHECK THE DIRECTION OF THE GRAIN?

  1. Flex test: The paper is easier to bend parallel to the fibres-that is, with the grain-than against the grain.
  2. Rip test: A rip in the paper will appear straight with the grain and jagged in the other direction.
